[Archived] City of Alexandria Celebrates Building Safety Month with May 4 Kick-Off Event

The City of Alexandria invites the public to a kick-off event for Building Safety Month, on Friday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Market Square (301 King St.). The annual awareness month recognizes the importance of building safety codes and the professionals who implement them.

The free event will feature a proclamation by Mayor Allison Silberberg and remarks by City Manager Mark Jinks, followed by lunch and exhibits from City departments and the local building community. The event will also feature a free training session on wood cutting and notching, presented by Simpson Strong-Tie in City Hall, Room 2000, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Building Safety Month is a public awareness campaign offered each year to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create and sustain safe and sustainable structures. This year’s theme is “Building Codes Save Lives.”

Founded by the International Code Council, Building Safety Month is celebrated by jurisdictions worldwide during the month of May. The campaign reinforces the need for adoption of modern, model building codes, a strong and efficient system of code enforcement and a well-trained, professional workforce to maintain the system.
