[Archived] Rescheduled: Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities to hold community meeting on the Dale Street Garden

For Immediate Release: January 10, 2018

On January 22, 2018 at Leonard "Chick" Armstrong Recreation Center, 25 West Reed Ave (formerly known as Cora Kelly Recreation Center), the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will hold a meeting with Rebuilding Together Alexandria to discuss the design and management plan for the proposed Dale Street Garden. The discussion will start at 7:30 p.m. following the Hume Springs Civic Association monthly meeting. This meeting had previously been scheduled for January 8, 2018 but was canceled due to winter weather conditions.

Throughout the past fall the City sought community feedback on the garden through surveys, canvassing, and community meetings (see findings here). Since then, the project team has developed a draft design and worked with neighborhood organizations to advance management plan discussions which they will present at the community meeting.

This section of Four Mile Run Park is located along Dale Street, behind Cora Kelly Elementary School and Recreation Center. The 2014 Citywide Parks Improvement Plan recommended transforming the currently vacant space into a community garden. A new community garden will help address the City’s need for gardening opportunities in the Arlandria community. Funds from Rebuilding Together Alexandria will be used towards a design and implementation of a garden through collaborative effort between the Park’s neighboring residents and organizations.
