[Archived] City of Alexandria Announces Schedule of Services for the 2017 Christmas Holiday, December 25-26

For Immediate Release: December 19, 2017

All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Monday, December 25, and Tuesday, December 26, in observance of Christmas.

Resource Recovery: Residential refuse and recycling will not be collected on Monday, December 25. Collection services will be delayed by one day during the week of December 25. The Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collections Drop-off Center will be closed on Monday, December 25.

Animal Shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open for adoptions from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 24, and closed on Monday, December 25. The shelter will be open on Tuesday, December 26, from 11 a.m. through 5 p.m., with animal visitation beginning at noon.

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.) and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) will close at noon on Friday, December 22, and will reopen on a regular schedule on Wednesday, December 27. The Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) will be closed on Monday, December 25, and Tuesday, December 26.

Historic Alexandria: On Saturday, December 23, The Alexandria Black History Museum will close at 1 p.m. On Sunday, December 24, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open during their regular hours, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  All City of Alexandria museums will be closed on Monday, December 25. Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703.746.5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703.746.4911; the emergency mental health services or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703.746.3401; the adult protective services hotline at 1.888.832.3858, and the sexual assault hotline at 703.683.7273.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed from Sunday, December 24 through Tuesday, December 26.

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits on Sunday, December 24, and Monday, December 25. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on December 24 and 25. All normal parking restrictions will be enforced on Tuesday, December 26.

Recreation and Art Centers: All City of Alexandria recreation and art centers, including the Chinquapin Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility will be closed on Sunday, December 24 and on Monday, December 25. The Torpedo Factory will be closed on Monday, December 25. On Tuesday, December 26, the Chinquapin Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the Charles Houston Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Torpedo Factory will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All other recreation centers will be closed on December 26.

Schools: All Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed for Winter Break from Thursday, December 21 through Tuesday, January 2.

State Offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, the Alexandria Circuit Court, the Alexandria General District Court, and the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (520 King St.) will close at noon on Friday, December 22, and will reopen on Wednesday, December 27. The Department of Motor Vehicles office at 2681 Mill Rd. will be closed on December 23, 24 and 25.

Transit: On Sunday, December 24, there will be no DASH service after 7 p.m. Any trip that is scheduled to start at its first time point at or before 7 p.m. will operate in its entirety. Any trip that is scheduled to start at 7:01 p.m. or later will not operate. On Monday, December 25, there will be no DASH service. The free King Street Trolley will operate on December 24 and 25 on its regular schedule, every 10-15 minutes, from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., between the King Street Metro Station and the Potomac River Waterfront.
