[Archived] City of Alexandria Announces Alexandria Poetry Contest

For Immediate Release: December 13, 2017

The “DASHing Words in Motion” poetry contest brings recognition to writers, promotes an appreciation of poetry as an art form, and provides inspiration to individuals using the Alexandria Transit Company’s DASH Buses and Trolleys.  The competition encourages quality writing from writers 16 years or older, who live, work or study in the City of Alexandria.  The “DASHing Words in Motion” program provides a venue for writers to display their poems.  The participation in the “DASHing Words in Motion” is voluntary.  Selected poets are not reimbursed for submittals or participation in the program.

The competition’s primary goal is to encourage a broad range of ideas and subject matter.  Poems should celebrate poetry.  They can address travel and modes of transportation.  Possible inspirational ideas might stem from The Alexandria Transit Company’s DASH buses motto is “Keep Alexandria Moving;” bus stops, neighborhoods, buses, roads, or other modes of transportation within the City of Alexandria; and community and connection. Winning poems will be published and placed on DASH buses and trolleys for the 2018 National Poetry Month (April).

The online submission deadline for both poetry opportunities is Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 5 p.m. To enter, visit www.alexandriava.gov/Arts
