[Archived] City of Alexandria Announces Schedule of Services for the 2017 Thanksgiving Holiday, November 23-24

For Immediate Release: November 14, 2017

All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Thursday, November 23, and Friday, November 24, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Resource Recovery: Residential trash and recycling will be collected on the regularly scheduled day during the week of November 20, including Thanksgiving Day, November 23. On Thanksgiving Day, trash and recycling collection will begin at 6 a.m., in order to clear routes early for the Annual Turkey Trot and allow City collection staff to spend most of Thursday and all of Friday with their families. 

Road Closure:  Mt. Vernon Avenue will be closed from Braddock Road through Uhler Avenue  on November 23, from 7 a.m. to Noon, for the Turkey Trot 5 Miler Race.  For more information about the race, visit Alexandria Turkey Trot.

Animal Shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be closed on November 23, but will still host its annual Kongs-giving event to create special holiday treats for homeless animals. The shelter will be open on November 24 from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m., with animal visitation beginning at noon.

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.) and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) will close at noon on Wednesday, November 22, and remain closed on November 23 and 24. The Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) will be closed on November 23 and 24.

Historic Alexandria: All City of Alexandria museums will be closed on November 23. On November 24, all museums will be open during regular hours except the Archaeology Museum (which will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and the Black History Museum (which will be closed).  For more information, call 703.746.4554 or visit alexandriava.gov/Historic.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703.746.5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703.746.4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703.746.3401; the adult protective services hotline at 1.888.832.3858, and the sexual assault hotline at 703.683.7273.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed on November 23 and 24.

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits on Thursday, November 23, and Saturday, November 25. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on November 23 and 25.   All normal parking restrictions will be enforced on Friday, November 24.

Recreation and Art Centers: All City of Alexandria recreation and art centers, including the Chinquapin Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility and the Torpedo Factory Art Center will be closed on November 23. On November 24, the Chinquapin Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the Charles Houston Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and the Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All other recreation centers will be closed on November 24.

Schools: All Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed on November 22, 23 and 24.

State Offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk's Office will be open all day on November 22 and will be closed on November 23 and 24. The Alexandria Circuit Court, the General District Court, and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will close at noon on November 22, and will remain closed on November 23 and 24. The Department of Motor Vehicles office at 2681 Mill Road will be closed on November 23, 24 and 25.

Transit: On November 23, the Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) bus service will not operate. The free King Street Trolley will operate on its regular schedule on November 23, every 10-15 minutes, from 10:30 a.m. to midnight between the King Street Metro Station and the Potomac River Waterfront. On November 24, both DASH and the King Street Trolley will operate on their  regular weekday schedules.
