For Immediate Release: October 23, 2017
On October 23, 2017, Johnathan Gomez Sorto, a 22-year old former Fairfax County resident, pleaded guilty to murder for his role in the gang-motivated slaying of Eduardo Chandias Almandarez. Almandarez was stabbed to death on or about November 28, 2015. His body was located in a park behind Cora Kelly School in the Arlandria neighborhood of Alexandria.
The evidence established that Almandarez was murdered by the criminal street gang, MS-13, because he had testified against an MS-13 member in Alexandria General District Court.
Gomez Sorto pleaded guilty on one count of Murder in the First Degree. The sentencing hearing in the matter was set for March 8, 2018.
Two co-defendants have previously been convicted of murder in relation to this case. Boris Rosa Castro was convicted of Murder in the First Degree on June 23, 2016, and Edwin Guerrero Umana pleaded guilty on October 6, 2016.
The defendant is incarcerated in the William G. Truesdale Alexandria Adult Detention Center pending his sentencing.
