SolarizeAlexandria, a program to make it easier and more affordable for residents and business owners to install solar power systems on Alexandria homes, will hold its third annual campaign through October 15. This year’s program provides a free solar site assessment for homes or businesses; discount pricing through bulk purchasing; project facilitation and qualified installation; financing and federal tax incentive options; and possible qualification for the City of Alexandria’s Solar Energy Equipment Tax Exemption.
The City is hosting two information sessions about SolarizeAlexandria and solar power options for homes or businesses.
Wednesday, September 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Mount Vernon Recreation Center (2701 Commonwealth Ave.)
Wednesday, October 4, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at City Hall in the Sister Cities Conference Room 1101 (301 King St.)
Property owners who register for the SolarizeAlexandria program will receive a free, no-obligation solar site assessment for their home or business. During this assessment, a qualified technician will evaluate determine whether solar power is a good option for your property. Homeowners and some businesses who would like to pursue solar can take advantage of discounted prices that leverage regional bulk pricing. Since 1978, the Alexandria City Code has provided a real estate tax exemption for the value of certified solar energy equipment. The 2015 and 2016 SolarizeAlexandria campaigns resulted in 19 new solar power systems installed in Alexandria, increasing the community’s solar power capacity by 88 kilowatts.
As part of the SolarizeAlexandria campaign, the City of Alexandria and the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) provide the Northern Virginia Solar Map online tool for residents and business owners to conduct a preliminary analysis of the solar energy potential for their properties. The Northern Virginia Solar Map provides information on the potential size and electricity savings of a solar power system.
Alexandria joins the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) and the nonprofit Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) to offer SolarizeAlexandria. Other Northern Virginia Solarize programs are located in Fairfax, Falls Church, Herndon, Leesburg/Loudoun County, and Vienna. LEAP also works with other localities to provide Solarize programs throughout Virginia.
