[Archived] Alexandria Fire Department Issues Reminder that Fireworks are Dangerous and Illegal

For Immediate Release: June 30, 2017

The Alexandria Fire Department reminds those who visit, live, and work in Alexandria that it is dangerous and illegal to store, sell or use any fireworks (including sparklers or novelty items) without a permit.

Decades of tragic experience have proved that fireworks are too dangerous to be used by anyone but licensed professionals. Improper handling of fireworks and sparklers results in more than 9,600 injuries nationwide each year.  Of these, 62 percent are burns and 20 percent are lacerations. Young people suffer the majority of fireworks injuries, which can result in amputations, severe eye injuries, disfigurement, and even death.

The public can enjoy the excitement and beauty of fireworks at City-sponsored events, such as the City Birthday Party (this year on July 8) or First Night Alexandria (every year on December 31).  There are also many authorized local displays in surrounding localities throughout the Independence Day holiday weekend. These programs are presented by trained and licensed professionals working in compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.

Any unauthorized fireworks found in Alexandria will be seized by the Fire Marshal at the owner's expense.  Fireworks violations are Class 1 misdemeanors and may be punishable by a $2,500 fine, 12 months in jail,or both. Fireworks violations may be reported 24 hours a day by calling 703.746.4444.  For immediate police, fire, or emergency medical assistance, call 911.
