[Archived] OCA to Review Use of Force During Simpson Stadium Event

For Immediate Release: June 27, 2017

The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney(OCA) is conducting a review of the officer-involved shooting that occurred on June 14th, 2017 at Simpson Field. During that active shooter incident, members of both the United States Capitol Police and the Alexandria Police Department employed deadly force.

OCA is tasked with reviewing any officer-involved shooting that occurs in the City of Alexandria. Therefore, the initiation of a review is a matter of routine and no inference should be made that anything improper occurred during the incident. OCA’s review is limited to determining whether the force employed by the officers was justified and reasonable in light of the law of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Given the rules of ethics applicable to public prosecutors, during the pendency of the review, OCA cannot comment on the facts or other details of the incident. Given the public interests at stake, OCA will make a limited and public release of information when the review is concluded. The review should take approximately 90 days.
