On June 27, the Alexandria City Council appointed Gloria A. Sitton as City Clerk and Clerk of Council, effective July 1. Sitton has served as Alexandria’s Deputy City Clerk since 2003. She has worked to implement initiatives including the establishment of an electronic agenda management system. Sitton succeeds Jacqueline M. Henderson, who is retiring.
“Gloria’s many years of experience in this field and with the City make her the right person for this position,” said Mayor Allison Silberberg. “As a resident, Gloria is also familiar with the Alexandria community.”
Sitton will be responsible for leading the Office of the City Clerk and Clerk of Council, attending City Council meetings, recording and transcribing official actions of City Council, maintaining official records, and serving as executive secretary to Alexandria’s boards and commissions.
Before coming to Alexandria, Sitton worked for the City of Greenville, SC, as the Deputy City Clerk. Sitton holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Spelman College and a graduate certificate in local government management from Virginia Tech.
