Alexandria City Council Adopts North Potomac Yard Small Area Plan Update

For Immediate Release: June 27, 2017

On June 13, the Alexandria City Council approved the Planning Commission’s recommendation to adopt the North Potomac Yard Small Area Plan (SAP) Update to the City Master Plan. The 2017 Update builds upon the 2010 North Potomac Yard SAP and provides a path for redevelopment of the area that integrates the future Potomac Yard Metrorail station. The adoption came after 12 months of review and community engagement, including public meetings, workshops, open houses, and online engagement facilitated by the 12-member Ad Hoc North Potomac Yard Advisory Group established by City Council in 2016.

The 2017 Plan provides guidance for creating a community that integrates environmental sustainability, transit, land uses, design, and open spaces. The Plan retains the 7.5 million square feet of development as originally approved, including approximately 1.3 million square feet of mixed-use development in close proximity to the new Metrorail station. The 2017 Plan also increases open space; introduces new concepts such as shared streets; provides transportation recommendations that prioritize pedestrians, bicyclists, transit, and vehicles; and establishes flexibility for integrating emerging technologies.
