[Archived] Fairfax County Resident Convicted of Aggravated Malicious Wounding in Shooting of Taxi Driver

On June 8, 2017, Troy Vann, a 17 year-old Fairfax County resident, pleas of guilty to a three-count indictment: Aggravated Malicious Wounding-Felony, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony-Felony, and Possession of a Concealed Weapon-Misdemeanor were accepted by the Court. 

The charges arose from the shooting of Izedin Ahmed, a 48 year-old taxi driver and Fairfax County resident. The offense occurred in the early morning hours of September 22, 2016, in the 4600 block of Duke Street. The defendant armed himself with a handgun, entered Mr. Ahmed’s taxi, demanded money, and shot Mr. Ahmed several times in the upper body. Witnesses in the area reported hearing gunshots and seeing a person run away from the taxi.

The defendant is a juvenile, however, he has been indicted as an adult in this case and therefore his name and age may be released.

Mr. Ahmed nearly died, and he remained in the hospital for two months. Doctors removed one of the bullets from his chest. He remained on life support and in a medically-induced coma for an extended time. Mr. Ahmed suffered permanent and significant injuries. A portion of his right shoulder was shattered and his lungs sustained permanent damage.

Police officers located the defendant near the crime scene several hours after the shooting, and he later admitted that he committed the offense. Police found the gun the defendant used in a wooded area near the crime scene, and forensic analysis later confirmed that the bullet removed from Mr. Ahmed had been fired from that gun.

Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Andrew Criado and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Audra O’Brien prosecuted the case on the behalf of the Commonwealth. The case was investigated by Detective Loren King of the Alexandria Police Department.

The case is scheduled for sentencing on September 28, 2017, in the Circuit Court for the City of Alexandria. The defendant faces maximum penalties of life in prison for Aggravated Malicious Wounding, three years for Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, and 12 months for Possession of a Concealed Weapon.
