For Immediate Release: June 2, 2017
The City of Alexandria has joined the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda, pledging to uphold goals embodied in the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Agreement has been signed by virtually every country in the world.
“We are fully committed to combating the adverse effects of climate change,” said Mayor Allison Silberberg. “We believe strongly that climate change is a real and significant threat that requires local and global action, and I’m proud that Alexandria stands together with so many other cities to uphold the goals of the Paris Agreement.”
Alexandria City Council adopted an Eco-City Charter in 2008 and an Environmental Action Plan in 2009. As the first locality in Virginia to adopt such environmental frameworks, Alexandria seeks to be a community where people can live healthier and more economically productive lives while reducing impact on the environment.
The Mayors Agenda calls for binding federal emissions reductions, identifying sources of greenhouse gas emissions in each community, promoting emissions reduction targets, developing community climate action plans, finding appropriate offset projects, and furthering climate equity and environmental justice. These goals are already well-aligned with the Alexandria Eco-City Charter and Environmental Action Plan. At its regular meeting on June 13, City Council will consider an additional resolution regarding climate change.
