City of Alexandria Installs New Retail Wayfinding Signs in Old Town

For Immediate Release: May 18, 2017

Retail Wayfinding Sign 2017 imageThe City of Alexandria has begun installing new retail wayfinding signage in Old Town along the King Street corridor, to help pedestrians find businesses on nearby streets. The durable and permanent new signage replaces aging A-frame signs at intersections along King Street.

The new Retail Wayfinding Signage Program was developed by the Ad Hoc Signage Committee  to standardize signage policies and provide consistent wayfinding along King Street. The new design uses individual panels for each business, allowing signs to be updated whenever businesses change. Businesses will pay an annual fee to participate in the signage program, which will be administered by City staff and governed by the 2010 Wayfinding Design Guidelines. All current A-frame signs along King Street will be removed by June 9.

This project supports recommendations made in the Wayfinding Design Guidelines, which outline the implementation of a comprehensive citywide signage system. The recommendations call for development of a vehicular and pedestrian wayfinding system for destinations throughout Alexandria.
