For Immediate Release: May 11, 2017
The Office of the Arts collaborating with the Alexandria Harmonizers will present the Armed Forces Day musical tribute to the military on Saturday, May 20, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Durant Arts Center 1605 Cameron St. The concert is free and open to the public.
The Alexandria Harmonizers are a 100-man chorus made up largely of veterans, active duty and retired military and Federal government employees. They started this tribute on Armed Forces Day in 2014 as a way to honor America's heroes prior to their trip to Normandy, France to participate in the 70th anniversary celebrations of the June 6th D-Day landings of World War II, where they sang at the Normandy and Brittany American cemeteries, and in St. Mere Eglise, Paris, and Cologne Germany. One of the highlights was a special concert for the widow of Army Air Corps pilot Billy Hayes.in the small French village of Levent.
The
Armed Forces Day Concert is a collaborative project between the Office of the
Arts and the Alexandria Harmonizers. The
Office of the Arts is a division of the Alexandria Department of Recreation,
Parks and Cultural Activities.
