[Archived] Music Through The Ages: Gospel and Barbershop

Alexandria’s Office of the Arts and the Alexandria Harmonizers invite you to attend a two day musical spectacular event - Music Through The Ages: Gospel and Barbershop – on Friday, May 19, 6 p.m.- 9 p.m. and Saturday, May 20, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Durant Arts Center, 1605 Cameron St.   Experience the sounds of Gospel and Barbershop music while celebrating their rich genres. The Grammy Award-winning “Fairfield Four” will headline the two days and will be singing in the traditional African American a cappella gospel style they have been known for since the group’s inception almost 100 years ago.  

Emcees, the Honorable John Chapman, Councilman, City of Alexandria and owner Manumission Tour Company, LLC (Friday) and Joe Cerutti, Artistic Director, Alexandria Harmonizers (Saturday), will guide the audience through the history of Gospel and Barbershop music through the ages with historical tidbits and insights.  Songs for Music through the Ages will showcase a variety of Gospel and Barbershop music styles. Participating choirs include: the Alexandria Harmonizers, Alfred Street Baptist Church’s Men’s Choir, City of Alexandria Employee Choir, George Washington Middle School, Jefferson Houston School, My Father’s House Christian Church, Shiloh Baptist Church, and Third Baptist Church. 

The Music through the Ages is partnering with ALIVE!, and Hunger Free Alexandria to host a community food drive.  Bring a nonperishable food item to the concert and help the hungry in Alexandria’s community.   Food items will be collected by ALIVE! who distributes and delivers food year round to those in need in Alexandria.

Music Through the Ages: Gospel and Barbershop is a project of the Office of the Arts, a division of the Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities.
