[Archived] City of Alexandria Prepares for Spring With Pothole Patrol and Neighborhood Cleanups

The City of Alexandria is preparing for warmer weather with its annual spring beautification efforts, including pothole repair, neighborhood cleanups, and free mulch.

Join the Pothole Patrol!

Through mid-April, the City is embarking on its annual effort to repair potholes. Potholes form when water seeps into tiny cracks in pavement and expands during freezing temperatures. During the 2016 campaign, crews repaired more than 2,000 potholes throughout Alexandria, and this year, crews will work diligently to repair damaged streets.

A typical pothole repair consists of digging out any loose material and installing a permanent hot asphalt patch. When weather does not permit a permanent repair, a cold mix material is used for a temporary patch, followed by a permanent repair later in the season.

Street Sweeping Resumes

Citywide street sweeping has resumed following the annual break for winter, and will continue through October. Public works crews are once again gearing up to keep our neighborhoods and commercial corridors clean and protect our waterways from debris runoff by regularly sweeping 560 lane miles. Gateway Cleaning

Part of Alexandria’s spring-cleaning efforts include a focus on cleaning and sprucing up key gateway entrances.  Crews will be inspecting guardrails, signage, sidewalks and asphalt drainage and performing general litter pickup.

Adopt-a-Block

The City’s adopt-a-block litter program promotes partnerships between the City and Alexandria residents, businesses and organizations to maintain litter-free neighborhoods and streets.  To  adopt a block, all that is needed are willing volunteers. To participate, a  group must be an established business, a government entity, or a community or public organization. Participants must be at least eight years old, and anyone under the age of 17 must have adult supervision. For more information about the program, visit the Street Cleaning page.

Mulch

Now is the time to place orders for mulch delivery from April through June. Delivery dates and times are limited, and appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a $50 delivery charge for either a half truck load (3 cubic yards) or full load (6 cubic yards).  For more information, visit www.alexandriava.gov/YardWaste.

Mulch is also available to residents and available for free pickup at 4215 Eisenhower Ave. Residents who wish to pick up mulch should note that mulch bins are only refilled from 7 a.m. to  3:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
