[Archived] Alexandria Captain Graduates from FBI National Academy

Alexandria Police Captain Shirl Mammarella graduated from the FBI National Academy last Friday, December 16, 2016, one of 225 graduates in the academy's 266th Session. The National Academy Program is held at the FBI Academy in Quantico, and consists of 10 weeks of coursework in intelligence theory, terrorism and terrorist mindsets, management science, law, behavioral science, law enforcement communication and forensic science. About 10 percent of the attendees of each session are international students. Thousands of international leaders from over 160 countries have graduated from the National Academy. The FBI National Academy began in 1935, and the number graduates now totals 49,686.

Captain Mammarella is the commander of the police department's Patrol Support Division. She joins the following current Alexandria police officers who have also completed the FBI National Academy: Acting Chief David Huchler, Deputy Chief Chris Wemple, Deputy Chief Shahram Fard, Captain Don Hayes and Captain Len Fouch. 
 
Captain Mammarella joined the Alexandria Police Department in 1987. During her tenure with the department she was assigned as a Vice Narcotics detective and a Domestic Violence detective, and also spent a great deal of time as a supervisor in the Traffic Unit. While in the Traffic Unit she represented the department in several significant traffic safety and parking initiatives. Most recently, Captain Mammarella completed a study and proposal for a new shift configuration for Patrol which was approved and will be implemented in January.
