[Archived] Park and Recreation Commission Seeks Nominations for the 2016 CIVIC Awards

For Immediate Release: December 19, 2016

The City of Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission announces its 31st  annual awards program to select and formally recognize outstanding residents who have provided a valuable service to our community in meeting recreation or park needs.  An Alexandria group, club, organization or corporate neighbor may also be nominated for an award recognizing volunteer service.  Nominees for the award for citizen, group, club, organization, or corporate neighbor should be volunteers who have contributed time, talent or resources in an exemplary fashion.  Youth nominations are encouraged.   Whether the volunteer activity involves removing invasive plants, coaching youth, or providing program support at City nature and recreation centers, the CIVIC Awards recognize the special, unsung volunteer efforts of Alexandrians involved in their community. The deadline to submit a nomination is Tuesday, January 31, 2017.

The primary purpose of the CIVIC Award is to recognize exemplary voluntary efforts by citizens and is not available to individuals for service in elected or appointed positions such as service on City Commissions, working groups or similar entities.  The CIVIC award is also not given for volunteer work in cultural and artistic pursuits because the City Arts Commission supports its own award program.

The awards will be presented before City Council in early 2017.  A nomination package is available online at www.alexandriava.gov/Recreation, or by calling 703.746.4343.

Mail nominations to Park and Recreation Commission, c/o Jack Browand, Division Chief, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria, VA 22314. Nominations may also be faxed to 703.684.6826, or submitted online at https://survey.alexandriava.gov/s3/CIVICAwards.

For more information on the 2016 CIVIC Awards, call Jack Browand, Division Chief, at 703.746.5504 or e-mail jack.browand@alexandriava.gov.
