[Archived] City of Alexandria Announces Schedule of Services for the 2016 Christmas Holidays, December 23-26

For Immediate Release: December 16, 2016

All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Friday, December 23, and Monday, December 26, in observance of the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day holidays.

Resource Recovery: Residential trash and recycling collections will be delayed by one day during the week of December 26.

Animal Shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will close at 2 p.m. on December 24, and remain closed until noon on December 26.

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.) and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) will be closed on Friday, December 23, and Monday, December 26. The Teen Wellness Center (3330 King St.) will also be closed on December 23 and 26.

Historic Alexandria: All Historic Alexandria museums and other facilities including the Historic Alexandria Gift Shop at the Hilton will be closed on December 25.  The Fort Ward Museum and the Alexandria Black History museum will be closed from December 23 through December 26. All other museums will revert to normal winter hours on Monday, December 26.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703.746.5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703.746.4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703.746.3401; the adult protective services hotline at 1.888.832.3858, and the sexual assault hotline at 703.683.7273.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed December 23 through December 26.

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits, on December 24 through December 26. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities).

Recreation Centers: On December 23 and 26, the Chinquapin Park Recreation center will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.., the Charles Houston Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and all other centers will be closed.  All recreation centers will be closed on December 24 and December 25.

Schools: The Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed from December 22, through  January 2. 

State Offices: The Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court at 520 King Street will close at noon on December 22 and remain closed through December 26. They Clerk of Circuit Court will close at 5 p.m. on December 22 and remain closed until December 26. The Department of Motor Vehicles Office at 2681 Mill Road will be closed December 23 through December 26.

Transit: Alexandria Transit Company's DASH bus service will operate on December 24 until 7 p.m. There will be no DASH service on December 25.  On December 26, DASH will operate on a Sunday schedule.  The free King Street Trolley will run during its regular operating hours, every 15 minutes, between the King Street Metro Station to the Waterfront, from 10 a.m. to midnight on December 23 and 24, and 10 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. on December 25 and 26.
