City of Alexandria Announces Schedule of Services for the 2016 Thanksgiving Holiday, November 24-25

For Immediate Release: November 21, 2016

All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Thursday, November 24, and Friday, November 25, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Resource Recovery: Residential trash and recycling will be collected on the regularly scheduled day during the week of November 21, including Thanksgiving Day, November 24. On Thanksgiving Day, trash and recycling collection will begin at 6 a.m., in order to clear routes early for the Annual Turkey Trot.

Animal Shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be closed on November 24. 

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.) and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) will close at noon on Wednesday, November 23, and remain closed on November 24 and 25. The Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) will be closed on November 24 and 25.

Historic Alexandria: All City of Alexandria museums will be closed on November 24. On Friday, November 25, all museums will be open during regular hours except the Black History Museum, which will be closed.  For more information, call 703.746.4554 or visit alexandriava.gov/Historic.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703.746.5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703.746.4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703.746.3401; the adult protective services hotline at 1.888.832.3858, and the sexual assault hotline at 703.683.7273.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed on November 24 and 25.

Parking:
 The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits, on November 24 and 25. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities).

Recreation Centers: All City of Alexandria recreation centers, including the Chinquapin Recreation Center, will be closed on November 24. On November 25, the Chinquapin Recreation Center will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Charles Houston Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.  All other recreation centers will be closed on November 25.

Schools: All Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed from Wednesday, November 23, through Friday, November 25.

State Offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court,  General District Court, and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will close at noon on November 23, and will remain closed on November 24 and 25. The Department of Motor Vehicles office at 2681 Mill Road will be closed November 24 and 25.

Transit: On November 24, the Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) bus service will not operate; the free King Street Trolley will operate on its regular schedule, running every 10-15 minutes from 10 a.m. to midnight. On Friday, November 25, DASH and the King Street Trolley will operate on a regular weekday schedule.
