[Archived] Alexandria Again Recognized Among the Nation’s Top Digital Cities

For Immediate Release: November 18, 2016

2016 Digital Cities Winner LogoThe Center for Digital Government has ranked Alexandria fourth of its size among the top "digital cities" in the United States, based on the 2016 Digital Cities Survey.  The annual program evaluates cities' approaches to information technology, community engagement, policy and operations.  This is the 12th consecutive year Alexandria has been ranked in the top 10, including two years with first place recognition.

"Alexandria continues to be an innovative leader in the public sector,” said City Manager Mark B. Jinks.  “In a challenging budget environment, strategic uses of technology offer cost-effective solutions that make government services more efficient, accessible and convenient.”

Digital Cities Survey judges recognized Alexandria’s strategic information technology plan, new website design and navigation, transparency initiatives, and the AlexEngage online civic engagement platform.  The study also cited growing use of cloud software services, improvements in the budget process, and cybersecurity upgrades.  According to the Center’s report, “Alexandria continues to work diligently to serve the needs of its growing community.”

“From open data portals to enhanced connectivity and mobile platforms, this year’s top-ranked cities are actively promoting transparency, encouraging citizen participation and making it easier for people to do business with government,” said Todd Sander, executive director of the Center for Digital Government.

Councilman John T. Chapman represented the City to formally receive the award at the National League of Cities conference in Pittsburgh on November 17.  For more information about the Digital Cities Survey, including a full list of winners, visit http://www.govtech.com/dc/digital-cities/Digital-Cities-Survey-2016-Winners-Announced.html .
