In honor of our nation’s veterans and the unique role they have played in preserving Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, the Museum will offer FREE tours on Friday, November 11 for all guests between 11a.m. – 4 p.m. Tours begin every 30 minutes on the quarter of and after the hour. Last tour will start at 3:45pm.
In 1929, American Legion Post #24 purchased the buildings that now make up Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and restored them with help from other community organizations as a memorial to honor the soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. After decades of meticulous restoration and upkeep, they donated the buildings to the City of Alexandria in 1972 and continue to use the 1870s wing as a meeting space for their Post. To honor this special connection, docent led tours of the Museum on Veteran’s Day will be free for all guests.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Gadsby’s Tavern was the center of social and political life in Alexandria and the new Federal City of Washington. The tavern served as the premier gathering place for residents – including George Washington – and visitors to eat, drink, learn, and influence history.
