[Archived] UPDATE: Driver Charged in Fatality Crash

In consultation with Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Alexandria Police have charged Leonard Wainstein, 92, of Fairfax, with two counts of Reckless Driving related to the pedestrian crash that occurred on August 2, 2016, in Old Town.

Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Old Town
The Alexandria Police Department is investigating a pedestrian crash that occurred on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, near the 100 block of S. Fairfax Street.

At approximately 10:09 a.m., police responded to the area for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Initial investigation indicates a 92-year-old man was attempting to park in a parking lot when he backed into the 49-year-old parking attendant. After striking the attendant the driver abruptly accelerated forward, driving into Swift Alley and striking another pedestrian, a 44-year-old man. The driver remained on the scene. The parking attendant was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The second victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased has been identified as Jeremais Herrera Rodriguez of Alexandria. 

Members of the Crash Reconstruction Team are investigating the incident. The investigation is ongoing. Alexandria Police ask that witnesses or people with information regarding this incident contact Investigator Diana Barrett at 703.746.6873.
