[Archived] Fair Chance Summit Encourages Employers to Hire Formerly Incarcerated

This spring, the White House issued a challenge to businesses to take the “Fair Chance Business Pledge” to improve their communities by reducing employment barriers for those with a criminal record and helping to create pathways for a second chance.

Now area businesses are invited to attend an informational and networking event to encourage employers to hire individuals who have had involvement in the criminal justice system. The Fair Chance Business Summit will be held on Thursday, July 28, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Beth El Hebrew Congregation, 3830 Seminary Road, Alexandria.

Enjoy light refreshments and meet other employers who are already making a difference. Hear from keynote speaker U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Chris Lu, and panelists who will share their insights into the benefits of hiring those with a criminal record. Attendees will learn about the Federal Bonding Program and Work Opportunity Tax Credit; meet service providers who train, educate and place this specific population; and find out more about the Fair Chance Business Pledge.

This event is sponsored by the Alexandria Reentry Council, comprised of the State of Virginia, City of Alexandria and community agencies that work together to assist those returning from incarceration in becoming contributing members of society, thereby helping to keep communities safe and saving taxpayer dollars through reduced recidivism. The Reentry Council aims to remove barriers to successful reentry, so that motivated individuals can attain jobs, secure housing and support their children and families.
