Metro SafeTrack Surge #4 Set to Begin July 12 Rethink Your Commute!

The City of Alexandria and DASH are working with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and the region's localities to assist travelers during WMATA's SafeTrack initiative. SafeTrack accelerates three years of track repairs into less than a year by significantly expanding maintenance work.
SafeTrack's 15 "Safety Surges" – long-duration track outages for major projects in key parts of the system – will cause delays throughout the region. The next surge will impact Alexandria travelers:
During Surge #4 (beginning at 5 a.m. on July 12 until closing on July 18), there will be no trains running between National Airport and Pentagon City, and the Crystal City Metrorail station will be closed. There will be 12 minutes between trains on both sides of the closure and WMATA expects “significant crowding” on trains.
Additionally, during Surge #4, Metro customers traveling to Washington, D.C. from stations south of Braddock Road should exit the train at Braddock Road and transfer to express shuttle bus service to Pentagon City. After Braddock Road, trains will continue north to National Airport before turning back. Passengers should not travel to the airport on Metro unless the airport is their intended destination.
What We Are Doing to Help
BUS
Free high-frequency express shuttle buses will run between the Braddock Road and Pentagon City Metro Stations to accommodate commuters on the Blue and Yellow Lines.
Free and increased frequency service on Metroway will run between the Braddock Road and Pentagon City Metro Stations.
Free, limited frequency shuttle buses will run between the Pentagon City and Crystal City Metro Stations and National Airport.
Free DASH bus service will run on the AT3 and AT4 routes during Surge 4. Service will be extended and added midday to operate every 20 minutes, from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., on weekdays.
Metrobus will increase the frequency of service on the 11Y (Mount Vernon to Potomac Park) and 10A (Huntington Metrorail Station to Pentagon Metrorail Station) bus routes, with normal fares.

RAIL
For riders from Alexandria and southern Fairfax County, consider riding Virginia Railway Express (VRE) from Franconia-Springfield or King Street to access Crystal City, L’Enfant Plaza and Union Station.
BIKE
Prior to Surge 4, the City added four new Capital Bikeshare stations, for a total of 24 stations citywide. Additional bikeshare capacity has been added at the Braddock Road Metro Station.
Capital Bikeshare has added an option for users to buy a single trip for $2.
ROADS
New carsharing and taxi areas have been added at the Braddock Road Metro Station.
In order to accommodate additional bus capacity, the City has temporarily prohibited street parking around Metro stations affected by surges, and has restricted some street sections to buses only. Please be alert for new traffic signs and patterns.
The City has adjusted its paving schedule to avoid work on major roads that may coincide with SafeTrack surges, and has asked private utility companies to do the same for scheduled maintenance.
The Alexandria Police Department is providing additional traffic control at key intersections impacted by the surges.
The City's Traffic Management Center is fully staffed and ready to assist and adjust traffic signal timing based on traffic needs.
During Surge 4, Alexandria taxi companies are required to offer a $15 flat rate, regardless of passengers or baggage, for trips between National Airport and the King Street-Old Town, Braddock Road, and Eisenhower Avenue Metro Stations.
TELEWORK
The City is reaching out to employers, businesses, and retailers to encourage teleworking and flexible work schedules. The City Manager has directed all City departments to expand telework and alternate work schedules for City employees.
