[Archived] City Presents Award-Winning Tons of Trucks Event on Saturday, July 16

The City will host its second annual Tons of Trucks event on Saturday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Chinquapin Park, 3210 King St. The event will take place rain or shine. 

All ages are invited to explore and get behind the wheel of more than 20 different vehicles from 7 City departments. Vehicles include a fire engine, armored ambulance, front-end loader, dump truck, bucket trucks, trash truck, sewer truck, vacuum truck, buses and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet the staff who build, serve and protect the City of Alexandria and learn about the vehicles they use. Truck-themed activities include an art project with the City’s Mobile Art Lab, giveaways, photo opportunities and food truck vendors.

Parking is available at T.C. Williams High School, 3330 King St., and the fee to attend is $5 per person or $15 per family of four upon entry.

The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received the Best Programming Award for its 2015 Tons of Trucks event from Learning Resources Network (LERN), the world’s largest lifelong learning association. According to Julie Coates, LERN’s Senior Vice President of Information Services, “In selecting programs to be recognized for excellence, the primary criteria judges used was being at the leading edge of the field of lifelong learning, as evidenced by innovation and documented success. The awards selection process is very competitive and it is truly an honor to be selected. The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities entry was selected from more than 100 nominations from four countries.”

“What won the award was conducting and responding to a needs assessment that led to a successful event. More importantly, the program is now on its way to meeting more needs of more City residents,” Coates said.
