[Archived] Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month Aims to Inform, Prevent Unintended Pregnancy in Youth

May is Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, and the Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy (ACAP) will be out in the community to increase awareness, and share information and resources about how to raise healthy, informed youth and prevent unintended pregnancy.

ACAP volunteers will be at the following Alexandria farmers markets:

• Four Mile Run Market  |  Sunday, May 15
• West End Market  |  Sunday, May 22
• Del Ray Market  |  Saturday, May 28

ACAP encourages the community to visit volunteers at these markets to learn more about current issues, gain insight through a variety of information and resources, and learn how to get involved.

In recognition of Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, ACAP has announced that the national teen pregnancy rate declined nine percent from 2013 to 2014. Data for Alexandria show that the rate of teen pregnancy dropped 20 percent from 2012 to 2013. Local data for 2013-2014 will be available in June.

ACAP continues its work through a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant to provide education and prevention strategies to Alexandria teens most at risk of pregnancy. This three-year grant will enable ACAP to provide curriculum, training and parent engagement, and information to the community.

The Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy is a community coalition working with individuals and community organizations that are committed to the health and well-being of youth. Its mission is to empower Alexandria’s young people while keeping teen pregnancy rates at their lowest. Volunteers are welcome.
