Dance in the Historic Ballroom, Saturday, January 23, 2016
Enjoy an evening in the 1860s in the historic Gadsby’s Tavern ballroom at the Civil War Ball on Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 8 - 11 p.m. Once known as Alexandria’s City Hotel, Gadsby’s is famous for quartering Unionist Governor Francis Pierpont and as a tourist attraction for soldiers because of its connection with George Washington. This elegant Victorian-era ball will feature the waltz, Virginia Reel, and more, as well as live music, desserts, and a cash bar. Fans of the PBS series Mercy Street will delight in immersing themselves in the world of Mary Phinney, Jedediah Foster, and Emma Green! Period attire (either military or civilian) encouraged. A ladies’ changing room is available with prior request. Cost is $45 in advance. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
In preparation for the ball, Civil War-era dance classes will be offered at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays, January 7, 14, and 21. The cost for lessons is $30 for the series or $12 per class.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Gadsby’s Tavern was the center of social and political life in Alexandria and the new Federal City of Washington. The tavern served as the premier gathering place for residents – including George Washington – and visitors to eat, drink, learn, and influence history.
