[Archived] Alexandria Electoral Board Re-Appoints Registrar of Voters

The Alexandria Electoral Board announced the unanimous re-appointment of Anna J. Leider to a four-year term as Registrar of Voters for the City of Alexandria.

Leider has been an Alexandria election official for nearly 17 years, including the past 16 months as the City’s General Registrar, more than three years as deputy registrar, seven years as a member of the Alexandria Electoral Board, and five years as an officer of election.  She has helped manage 32 elections, including three presidential elections and three statewide or regional election recounts.  Leider has also served on the City's Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee and 250th Anniversary Commission.

In announcing the re-appointment, Susan Kellom, Secretary of the Alexandria Electoral Board, described Ms. Leider as “an innovative, effective public servant” and said “Alexandria is fortunate to have someone with her experience serving our community.” 

Leider grew up in Alexandria, attending Alexandria City Public Schools and graduating from T.C. Williams High School.  She holds a bachelor's degree in American Studies from Amherst College, and a master's degree in business administration from New York University.  She also studied the history of in a Master’s program at the University of Chicago.

The position of general registrar is established by the Constitution of Virginia for each city and county.  Each registrar is appointed by a local electoral board, which is in turn appointed by the judges of the circuit court.  The registrar's statutory responsibilities include operating a local office and voter registration services, maintaining voter registration records, certifying candidates for local office, and providing local administration of elections.
