[Archived] Reception Celebrates New Public Art Project, National Public Works Week

Join the City of Alexandria for a reception celebrating the debut of a new public art project and National Public Works Week. The event will be held on Sunday, May 17 from noon to 2 p.m., at Luckett Field, 3540 Wheeler Ave.  Reception attendees will have an opportunity to meet the artists whose work appears in the Traffic Control Box Public Art Project, visit the Mobile Art Lab, and enjoy refreshments, including popcorn from Popped Republic.

Artists created four unique designs to wrap 12 traffic boxes along Duke Street, transforming them into colorful works of art.  The City invited artists and artist teams living and working in Virginia, Maryland, District of Columbia, West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina and Tennessee to submit their qualifications for this project. More than 60 artists and artist teams submitted their portfolios. Of that group, two artists and one artist team were selected: Erin Curtis from Washington, D.C.; Anthony Palliparambil from Bowie, MD; and Pamela Underhill and Roger Foster from Alexandria, VA. 

In addition to celebrating these artists’ work, the reception also kicks off National Public Works Week (NPWW), May 17-23.  Established in 1960, NPWW honors the tens of thousands of men and women who provide and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works, and calls attention to the importance of public works in community life.
