[Archived] Sheriff’s Office Wins Regional Honor Guard Competition

The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard won top honors at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) annual honor guard drill competition on Saturday, May 9.

The competition of five area teams took place immediately following the annual wreath laying ceremony hosted by COG’s Correctional Chiefs Committee at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne emceed this year’s event for National Correctional Officers and Employees Week which ran from Sunday, May 3 through Saturday, May 9.

Members of the U.S. Army’s Old Guard from Fort Myer judged the drill competition, now in its 24th year. This year marks the second time in the last three years that the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office finished first.

The Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard, commanded by Lieutenant Joseph Pankey, performs at ceremonial functions, marches in parades, participates in memorial events, and officially represents the Sheriff’s Office at special occasions.
