For Immediate Release: April 24, 2015
The City of Alexandria Commission for Women sponsored the 22nd Annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on April 23. Sixty students from T.C. Williams High School and the Minnie Howard Campus were introduced to various career fields.
This year’s theme was: “#MPOWR - Knowledge + Choice = Strength.” In addition to workplace experiences, mentees enjoyed a kickoff reception and luncheon featuring guest speakers Mayor William D. Euille, City Manager Mark Jinks and Deputy City Manager Debra Collins.
Among the 30 City mentors were Judge James Clark, Delegate Charniele Herring, School Board Member Chris Lewis, Deputy City Managers, Debra Collins, Laura Triggs, Emily Baker and Councilmembers John Chapman and Del Pepper.
“The mentors have volunteered their time to share with you, listen to you and guide you,” said Mayor Euille. “Take advantage of their knowledge by sharing your goals and discussing the possibilities you have. Listen to the mentors’ experiences; they can empower you to find your journey.”
Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day is nationally sponsored by the Ms. Foundation. The event gives youth an opportunity to observe men and women in the workplace. For more information or to participate next year, contact Jacinta Greene at 703.732.5986 or visit www.alexwomen.com.
