[Archived] City of Alexandria to Host Moroccan Days Festival

For immediate release: April 22, 2015

The City of Alexandria will host the Moroccan Days cultural festival April 26 through April 29, at Market Square, 301 King Street.  Admission is free.

The Festival will showcase the rich cultural and artistic traditions of Morocco. An opening ceremony on Monday, April 27, at noon will feature remarks by Mayor William D. Euille, and Morocco’s Minister of Handicrafts & Social and Solidarity-based Economy Fatima Marouan.

Morocco’s handicraft marketplaces--a mix of Amazigh, Sephardic, European, Arab-Islamic and African cultures—have become melting pots of diverse artistic influences. Selling handicraft goods has become a major economic force in the country, with more than 2.3 million artisans generating eight percent of the country’s total gross domestic product. The sector creates sustainable jobs that benefit many families in urban centers, as well as in rural areas where work opportunities are in short supply.
