[Archived] Kick Butts Day Takes Aim at Smoking

Kick Butts Day, the annual anti-smoking event sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, will be held Wednesday, March 18. In Alexandria, the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria, in partnership with the Campagna Center’s Building Better Futures Program, Jefferson Houston's 21st Century Community Learning Center and the Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, will support the Food and Drug Administration’s “Break the Chain” campaign by engaging more than 30 City youth to ensure that tobacco vendors are checking photo IDs.

Mayor William D. Euille will kick off the event at 3:30 p.m. at T.C. Williams High School, 3330 King St., followed by Deputy Chief David Huchler, of the Alexandria Police Department, who will address the group. The event will be emceed by T.C. Williams students Abby Hamilton and Andrea Melara.

Kick Butts Day is an annual day of activism that empowers youth to take action against tobacco use. More than 2,000 events are held around the country mobilizing youth to raise awareness about the problems of tobacco use in schools and the community.

SAPCA is an alliance of parents, youth, schools, City health and recreation agencies, media, non-profits, businesses, policymakers and law enforcement whose mission is to engage diverse sectors of the community in collaborative, cross-cultural and comprehensive substance abuse prevention efforts that result in a reduction of underage substance use and abuse in the City of Alexandria.
