4 Spring Lecture Series: Iron Confederacies: Southern Railways, Klan Violence and Reconstruction, by Scott Nelson, The College of William & Mary. Scott Reynolds Nelson is Legum Professor of History at the College of William and Mary. He is the prizewinning author of five books on nineteenth-century American history. The New York Times has most recently called him a “fascinating guide to the grim landscape of Reconstruction.” His first book, Iron Confederacies, explored the birth of the first modern corporation – the Southern Railway – and its outsized influence in cementing the inequalities of the modern South. Each presentation will be held in the Lecture Hall of The Lyceum --- Alexandria’s History Museum, at 7:30 PM, and $5 is requested for each program; $17 if you pay for all 4 lectures in advance. 14 “Her Story: Women in Action for Girl Scout Daisies and Brownies,” Daisies, Brownies, and their accompanying adults will participate in hands-on activities, talk with a panel of Girl Scouts and discover how scouting empowered them, and add their own future goals to a timeline of Juliette Gordon Low’s story. This program is for Girl Scout Brownies and older Girl Scout Daisies, ages 6 and up.

22 A treat for Brahms lovers! On Sunday, March 22, 3:00 to 4:30 PM, Eclipse Chamber Orchestra will present a chamber music program of music by Brahms--the hauntingly beautiful Cello Sonata in E minor and the monumental piano Quartet in C minor. Featured performers are violinist Jane Bowyer Stewart, cellist David Teie, violist Beth Dunkel, and pianist Kathryn Brake. Come and experience the height of Romanticism and the genius of Brahms! 24 Davis High School Madrigals: The Davis Madrigal Singers (founded in 1966), an auditioned group of 28-32 high school students from Davis, California, perform a wide variety of music dating from the 15th century to the present. 12 Join Friday Morning Music Club artists for an evening of chamber music on Sunday, April 12, 2015 featuring Dorotea Racz and Dmitry Samogray performing the Shostokovich Sonata for cello and piano in D Minor, op. 40 and Gwyn Jones and Rosanne Conway performing the Sonata for flute and piano by Francis Poulenc. 30 Spring Lecture Series: “The Meaning of Freedom in the Aftermath of Slavery, 1865-1867” by Leslie Rowland, The University of Maryland. Drawing from the work of the Freedmen and Southern Society Project (FSSP) at the university, Dr. Rowland will discuss the aspirations of former slaves following the end of the Civil War and their struggle to make freedom a reality. The FSSP is publishing Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation, 1861-1867, a multi-volume edition that documents the transition from slavery to freedom in the U.S. South. 21 Spring Lecture Series: “The Art of Memorializing the Civil War” by Susan Cumbey, Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site. In the years following the Civil War, a significant effort was made to commemorate and honor the service and sacrifices of its participants through public monuments, paintings and prints. The memorial movement that emerged in the last quarter of the 19th century and into the early 20th century was fueled by the growth of veterans’ organizations, civic interest in honoring those who served, and the national effort to adorn public spaces. This lecture will present an overview of commemorative Civil War art, with selected examples ranging from sculptural monuments to cycloramas.
