[Archived] City of Alexandria Announces Schedule of Services for the 2015 New Year’s Day Holiday

All City of Alexandria government offices will be open on New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31, 2014. City government offices will be closed on Thursday, January 1, 2015, in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday.

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.) and the Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) will be closed on January 1 and 2.  The Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) will be closed on January 1.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703.746.5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703.746.4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703.746.3401; and the sexual assault hotline at 703.683.7273.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on December 31, and closed on January 1.

Historic Alexandria: All Historic Alexandria facilities will be open on their regular schedules on December 31, with the exception that the Archaeology Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All museums will be closed on January 1. Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits, on January 1. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities).

Recreation Centers: On December 31, Alexandria neighborhood recreation centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Chinquapin Recreation Center will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and the Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All City of Alexandria recreation centers will be closed on January 1.

Resource Recovery: Residential refuse and recycling will be collected on Wednesday, December 31. There is no collection scheduled on Thursday, January 1; Thursday’s collection will take place on Friday, January 2. 

Residents who receive City refuse collection may place Christmas trees at the curb for recycling on regular trash collection days, from Monday, January 5 to Friday, January 15. Trees set out before that time will be collected as regular refuse and will not be recycled. For more information, visit alexandriava.gov/SolidWaste.

Schools: All Alexandria City Public Schools are closed through January 2, and will reopen January 5.

State Offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court will be closed on January 1; the General District Court and  Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed on January 1 and 2; the Alexandria Court Services Unit will be closed January 1 and 2; and the Alexandria office of the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (2681 Mill Rd.) will close at noon on December 31 and will be closed on January 1. 

Transit: On December 31, the Alexandria Transit Company’s DASH bus service will operate a regular weekday schedule with the addition of extended Trolley service for First Night Alexandria (see below). There will be no DASH service on January 1, except for the King Street Trolley. 

Trolley: On December 31, the free King Street Trolley will begin at 10 a.m. and provide shuttle service for First Night Alexandria until 1 a.m. On January 1, the trolley service will operate on its normal schedule, every 15 minutes between the King Street Metrorail Station and the Potomac River Waterfront from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m.
