Children Invited to “Preparing for a Ball” at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum

Learn dancing and food presentation ideas to host an 18^th-century ball

Balls were popular entertainment in the 18^th-century and, with the help of Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, families and scout groups can learn how to bring this tradition to life.  During the hour-long program, guests will see both ballrooms of the museum, practice the tasks involved in preparing a special food display, and learn a period dance.  Event includes a craft and recipe to take home. 

Preparing for a Ball will be Saturday, January 31, 2015.  The first program begins at 10:30 a.m., with a new group starting every 45 minutes; last program begins at 3:15 p.m.  Cost is $6 per person, both children and adults.  To purchase tickets, visit shop.alexandriava.gov or call 703.746.4242.  Large groups can easily be accommodated. 

As America began as a nation during the late 18^th century and emerged in the 19^th century, Gadsby’s Tavern was the center of social and political life in Alexandria as well as the new Federal City of Washington. The tavern served as the premier gathering place for residents – including George Washington – and visitors to eat, drink, learn, and influence history.  Tavern keepers John Wise and John Gadsby hosted balls, performances, and meetings, and their accommodations were known as the best by travelers near and far.
