For Immediate Release: November 19, 2014

City Manager Rashad M. Young has announced that Deputy City Manager Thomas C. Gates will resign effective December 12 to accept appointment as County Administrator for Roanoke County, Va.

"Tom has helped shepherd some of the City's most important initiatives over the last five years," said Young.  "His work to improve the City’s budget process, civic engagement, internal operations, and communications will pay dividends for our organization for years to come."

Gates joined the City in 2009 as Assistant City Manager for Management Improvement.  As Deputy City Manager, he is responsible for organizational strategy and efficiency through oversight of the City’s Office of Management and Budget, Office of Performance and Accountability, Office of Internal Audit, Office of Communications and Public Information, and Department of Human Resources.

"I’m proud of the work we’ve done to help promote accountable and fiscally responsible government," said Gates.  "I’m excited to take on a new opportunity, but I'll miss the people I've come to know in Alexandria."
