[Archived] George Washington Lectures at Gadsby's Tavern-Oct. 8 and 15

George Washington LecturesThe lectures will take place on Wednesday, October 8 and Wednesday, October 15. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the lectures begin at 7:30 p.m.

On October 8 Dr. Henriques discusses Who Can We Trust Now?:George Washington and Benedict Arnold’s Treason.  General Benedict Arnold’s audacious plan to deliver the crucial fortress at West Point to the British was one of the most dramatic events of the American Revolution. Professor Peter Henriques will discuss George Washington’s relationship with Arnold and how Washington responded to the treason and its aftermath, offering insights into his leadership and character.

On October 15, George Washington’s Last Lecture: “I Am Not Afraid,” Dr. Henriques argues that there is a third and final farewell address, after Washington’s first first farewell address at the end of the War of Independence and his second and more famous farewell address at the end of his term as President. Dr. Henriques will examine what this third farewell address is and will focus on George Washington’s death, an event which reveals much about America’s greatest leader.

Admission is $12 per person, per lecture and $10 for members of Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Society and Gadsby’s Tavern Museum volunteers. Tickets may be purchased by calling 703.746.4242 or through the online shop at http://shop.alexandriava.gov.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Gadsby’s Tavern was the center of social and political life in Alexandria and the new Federal City of Washington.  The tavern served as the premier gathering place for residents – including Washington – and visitors to eat, drink, learn, and influence history.
