[Archived] War of 1812 Film Screenings-August 27 and 28

Free Screenings of The Buccaneer, both 1938 and 1958 Versions

War_of_1812_logoWednesday, August 27 features the 1938 version of The Buccanneer, starring Fredric March as the pirate Jean Lafitte during the War of 1812’s famous Battle of New Orleans.  Only recently released to DVD, this is a rare chance to see legendary Hollywood director Cecil B. DeMille’s first version of this movie.

Thursday, August 28 features the 1958 remake of The Buccanneer, starring Charlton Heston as General Andrew Jackson and Yul Brynner as the pirate Jean Lafitte.  While Cecil B. DeMille served as an uncredited executive director, his son-in-law Anthony Quinn directed the film.  This was the last film to bear DeMille’s distinct stamp.

The Film Screenings are part of the City of Alexandria’s commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.  While war was declared in 1812, it did not reach Alexandria’s shores until 1814.  The City of Alexandria and community partners are commemorating Alexandria in the War of 1812 through lectures, concerts, and specialty tours, culminating in a free Signature Event in Waterfront Park on Sunday, August 31, 2014 from noon—5 p.m.
