Fifer has served as Acting Director since February.

Fifer joined the City of Alexandria in 2003 as E-Government Manager, and became Deputy Director of Communications and Public Information in 2010. Prior to his work in Alexandria, he served for seven years as the webmaster and electronic communications coordinator for the City of Roanoke. He serves as president of the Virginia Coalition for Open Government and president of Virginia Government Communicators. Fifer holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Virginia Tech, and a master's degree in public administration from George Mason University.
