[Archived] Alexandria’s First Half Real Estate Tax Bills Mailed May 7

News Highlights:

More Information:

The City of Alexandria has mailed bills for the first half 2014 real estate tax and refuse fee to all property owners and/or mortgage companies. The 2014 real estate tax rate is $1.043 per $100 of assessed value. In the FY 2015 Approved Budget, the residential refuse fee increased to $337. However, the FY 2014 fee of $328 remains in effect for the first half 2014 real estate tax billing, so bills for properties subject to the fee show a refuse fee of $164.

Please note that the City’s Real Estate Tax Relief Program for Elderly and Disabled Persons changed for 2014, as noted in the following table. For more information, please contact Tax Services, located at City Hall, 301 King Street, Room 1700, by email at taxrelief@alexandriava.gov or by phone at 703.746.3901, Option 6.

EDTR rate change chart

First half real estate tax and refuse fee payments are due Monday, June 16. In accordance with City Code, late payment penalty and interest will be assessed on all real estate taxes and refuse fees that are not paid or postmarked by the due date. The late payment penalty is 10 percent of the combined total of the tax and refuse fee, or $10, whichever is greater. Interest accrues at an annual rate of 10 percent for the first year and five percent for each year thereafter, beginning June 17, 2014, and continues until the entire outstanding balance is paid.

The Code of Virginia does not allow for waiver of tax, penalty, or interest due to inability to pay or failure to receive a tax bill. Property owners who do not receive a real estate tax bill in the mail by June 1 and do not have their real estate taxes paid by their mortgage companies should contact the City’s Treasury Division at payments@alexandriava.gov, or call 703.746.3902, Option 8, to request a bill. Detailed real estate tax balances and payment history are available 24 hours a day on the City’s website at realestate.alexandriava.gov. Property owners who changed their mailing address but did not previously report this change to the City should contact the Real Estate Assessor’s Office at realestate@alexandriava.gov, or call 703.746.4646, to ensure that future bills and correspondence are mailed to the correct address.
