[Archived] Alexandria Detention Center Earns Accreditation, Maintains Triple Crown Honors

The American Correctional Association’s Commission on Accreditation for Corrections has reaccredited the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center and recognized the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office for its high quality of jail management. The ACA accreditation focuses on all phases of jail operations, including administration and management, physical plant, institutional operations and services, and inmate programs. Alexandria received 100 percent approval on each of the applicable mandatory standards, according to the assessment team which conducted its audit in October 2013. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office obtained 97.7 percent compliance on non-mandatory standards.

The ACA presented the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office with an official Certificate of Accreditation during its recent winter conference. Technical Services Commander Mondre’ Kornegay and Accreditation Manager Debra Defreitas formally accepted the award following a panel review with Commission members on Monday, February 3.

With the ACA accreditation, the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center has maintained its “Triple Crown Award” from the National Sheriffs’ Association for achieving simultaneous accreditation from the ACA, the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. This is the fifth time that the Detention Center has won the Triple Crown; previously, the award was bestowed in 1995, 2000, 2003, and 2008. The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Department of Corrections have also certified the Detention Center.

Sheriff Dana Lawhorne says, “We are not only honored to receive this recognition, but the people of Alexandria should feel proud as well. Our detention center, our staff members and our contract providers reflect the highest standards and are very deserving of this recognition.”
