[Archived] City Hires Kate A. Garvey as Director in the Department of Community and Human Services

The City of Alexandria has announced the appointment of Kate A. Garvey as Director of the Department of Community and Human Services.

Garvey brings more than 20 years of experience to the City in the field of health and human services at the local government level.  She comes to Alexandria from Montgomery County, MD, where she served as Chief of Youth and Family Services/Social Services Director.  Prior to her tenure in Montgomery County, she served as Executive Deputy Director for the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.  Garvey, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, has extensive skill in community development, early childhood initiatives, service integration and change management. 

“We are very excited that Kate is joining our team,” said Deputy City Manager Debra Collins. “She has a strong commitment to public service and brings a great deal of experience and knowledge to our City.”

Garvey is expected to start work with the City February 18.
