[Archived] Civil War Ball to Be Held January 25 in Historic Ballroom of Gadsby’s Tavern Museum

Enjoy an evening in the 1860s in the historic Gadsby’s Tavern ballroom at the Civil War Ball on Saturday, January 25, 2014, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Once known as Alexandria’s City Hotel, Gadsby’s is famous for quartering Unionist Governor Francis Pierpont and as a tourist attraction for soldiers because of its connection with George Washington. This elegant, Victorian-era ball will feature the waltz, Virginia Reel, and more, as well as live music, desserts, and a cash bar. Period attire (military or civilian) or after-five wear encouraged. A ladies’ changing room is available with prior request. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

In preparation for the ball, Civil War-era dance classes will be offered at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays, January 9, 16, and 23. The cost for lessons is $30 for the series or $12 per class.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Gadsby’s Tavern was the center of social and political life in Alexandria and the new Federal City of Washington.  The tavern served as the premier gathering place for residents – including George Washington – and visitors to eat, drink, learn, and influence history.
