Gadsby’s Tavern Museum to Host George Washington Birthnight Banquet, Ball, & Madeira Tasting

The George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee and Gadsby’s Tavern Museum are pleased to present the annual celebration of the birth of our first President, George Washington. The 2014 George Washington’s Birthnight Banquet and Ball will be held Saturday, February 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the historic ballroom of Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, with the ball to open at 9 p.m.    

Set in the year 1799, this re-creation celebrates the famous party held for Washington’s birthday. The evening includes a three-course 18th-century banquet by Gadsby’s Tavern Restaurant, English country dancing, toasts, a special 18th-century style dessert collation, and character re-enactors – including General and Mrs. Washington. “After-five” attire is encouraged; period costumes are optional.

Tickets for the Birthnight Banquet and Ball are available, beginning at $120 per person, or $50 for the ball only. For $150, enjoy dining in a private room with the Washingtons themselves or for $200, be seated at the same table as the Washingtons.

Participants can prepare for the ball with instruction on Thursday evenings on January 30, February 6, and February 13 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Learn the basic steps of English country dancing for $12 per class or $30 for the series.

In addition, toast George Washington on the weekend of his birthday celebration as you enjoy Madeira wine – his favorite drink – with him! Gadsby’s Tavern Museum is hosting a Madeira wine tasting with General Washington at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 16.  Tast four Malmsay Madeira’s, of different vintages, produced by Blandy’s, a family-owned business since 1811. Learn about the history of Madeira and its consumption by our Founding Fathers while enjoying glasses with food pairings. Tickets are $45 per person inclusive.
