The Alexandria Electoral Board has announced the appointment of Anna J. Leider as the general registrar for the City of Alexandria.  Leider will succeed Tom Parkins, who is retiring effective December 31, 2013.

Leider has been an Alexandria election official for more than 15 years, including three years as the City’s deputy registrar, seven years as a member of the Alexandria Electoral Board, and five years as an officer of election.  She has helped manage 30 elections, including three presidential elections and three statewide or regional election recounts.  Leider has also served on the City’s Election Process Review Committee, Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee, and 250th Anniversary Commission.

“Alexandria has a long tradition of professionally and fairly administered elections and voter registration,” said Alexandria Electoral Board Secretary Donald E. Ledwig.  “We are fortunate to have in Anna a registrar with extensive electoral experience and familiarity with our community.”

Leider grew up in Alexandria, attending Alexandria City Public Schools and graduating from T.C. Williams High School.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in American studies from Amherst College, and a master’s degree in business administration from New York University.  In Leider’s previous career, she owned and operated a publishing company specializing in college planning.

The position of general registrar is established by the Constitution of Virginia for each city and county.  Each registrar is appointed by a local electoral board, which is in turn appointed by the judges of the circuit court.  The registrar’s statutory responsibilities include operating a local office and voter registration services, maintaining voter registration records, and providing local administration of elections.
