[Archived] Nancy Dunning Homicide, 10-Years Later; Police Actively Investigating Crime

On December 5, 2003, Alexandria resident Nancy Dunning was found deceased in her home from several gunshot wounds. Nancy was a well-known real estate agent and wife of then Alexandria Sheriff, James Dunning.

Nancy Dunning’s death was a shock to the Alexandria community. Her family, friends, and concerned business owners gathered a substantial reward for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of her killer. They also hold a vigil in her memory every year near the anniversary of her death.

Over the last ten years, the Alexandria Police Department has used numerous experienced detectives and external entities to review Mrs. Dunning's death.

This case is still active. The death of James Dunning in 2012 has not had an impact on the investigation. It is currently under a complete review, including interviews of possible witnesses and a review of all forensic evidence. Forensic technology that was not available ten years ago is being utilized. The Department plans to use all available avenues of investigation to solve this crime.
