[Archived] City Hosts An Evening with Laurie Olin, Preeminent Landscape Architect

Event kicks off series of Community Meetings for Waterfront Landscape, Flood Mitigation Design Process

The City of Alexandria will kick off a series of community meetings for the Waterfront’s Landscape and Flood Mitigation design process with an Evening with Laurie Olin, renowned landscape architect, on Tuesday, October 15,  from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the United Way Worldwide Building, 701 N. Fairfax St. Mr. Olin is considered one of the pre-eminent landscape architects in his profession and was the recipient of the 2012 National Medal of Arts. Alexandria has selected Olin’s firm, The Olin Studio, to assist the City in taking the illustrative concept drawings in the approved Waterfront Small Area Plan to the next level of design, in collaboration with URS Corporation, engineering experts selected to assist with the waterfront flood mitigation improvements. This process is anticipated to occur over the next nine months.

The October 15 public meeting will give Alexandrians an opportunity to hear directly from Olin on the philosophy that guides him in designing award winning preeminent public spaces, parks, waterfronts and flood mitigation features around the world.

This series of community meetings is intended to provide the public with opportunities to track the design work and to provide input.  The full series will be announced shortly on the City’s Waterfront Small Area Plan website. All meetings are free and open to the public.

For more information relating to the Waterfront Small Area Plan and the implementation process, please access the Waterfront Small Area Plan website.
